APLA carries out a field tour in Husan and Qalandiya villages

In the context of its field monitoring of development project outcomes, the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) carried out a field tour to several initiatives implemented under the Sub-grant Program to Support Social and Economic Development in Area C, implemented by APLA with funding from the European Union and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Participants included Janine Abu Azzam, EU Program Manager for Area C and Local Governance; Dr. Marco Andrew, Deputy Head of SDC International Cooperation; and Aya Khashan, SDC Local Program Manager.

The field tour began with a visit to the Ein al-Balad project in Husan, which restores the stone walls of the village’s spring basin in a manner that preserves its historical character. The delegation then proceeded to the Qalandiya Public Park. As one of the community-driven initiatives implemented under the Sub-grant program, this park provides a safe and accessible public space for local residents. During the tour, the delegation was briefed on the main challenges that local government units (LGUs) faced in implementing these initiatives, especially given their location in Area C.

EU and SDC representatives commended the extraordinary efforts exerted by LGUs despite the complex circumstances, reaffirming their commitment to continuing cooperation with APLA to provide as much support as possible to Area C communities. They emphasized that these initiatives represented a vital link in a broader system of political and development assistance provided by donor agencies to ensure dignified living conditions, protect Palestinian cultural and environmental heritage, and promote sustainable local development in Area C.

LGUs reiterated their support and encouragement for projects that directly strengthen the resilience of citizens and improve their quality of life. They affirmed their dedication to mobilizing all available efforts and resources to implement high-quality, integrated initiatives that respond to local needs and offer practical, sustainable solutions to current challenges. They stressed the importance of maintaining and expanding international support for such projects, given their tangible role in fostering stability and advancing sustainable development pathways.
