APLA Completes the Technical Handover of the Beit Awwa Economic and Social Development Center Project

The Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) has completed the technical handover procedures of the Beit Awwa Economic and Social Development Center Project, following a field visit conducted in cooperation with Beit Awwa Municipality to the project site. The project was implemented under the initiative “Empowering Local Government Units through Local Economic Development Grants,” funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs through APLA.

Beit Awwa Economic and Social Development Center project focuses on establishing an integrated community center that combines economic activity with social services, aiming to empower marginalized groups—particularly women and youth—by providing a supportive environment for small businesses and entrepreneurship, and by creating direct local employment opportunities that contribute to reducing unemployment and strengthening economic self-reliance.

The center includes dedicated spaces for local food production and processing, in addition to a popular market for marketing the products of households and small-scale projects. This contributes to building an integrated local economic cycle that retains added value within the community and supports the sustainability of income for productive families.

The project also involves the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the former municipal site, transforming it into a multi-purpose community center. This includes the renovation of existing buildings, the provision of sanitary facilities, children’s play areas, and the installation of electrical systems and public safety measures, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment that responds to the needs of different age and social groups.

This development intervention represents an integrated model for local development in both its approach and impact, linking economic and social dimensions while repurposing an underutilized site into a space for production and community engagement that contributes to improving local living conditions. The project forms part of a broader set of interventions led by APLA to support local authorities in marginalized areas, strengthen economic and social resilience, and reinforce the role of local government in resource management and sustainable development.
