APLA and Al-Bireh Municipality Implement a Braille-Based Initiative to Introduce Students to the SDGs

The Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA), in partnership with Al-Bireh Municipality, implemented an adapted educational initiative for students at Al-Qabas School for Visual Impairment as part of the “Sustainable Development Stories” project funded by ESCWA, and in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This intervention reflects APLA’s broader approach to opening new pathways for engaging diverse groups in SDG awareness and extending the localization process beyond institutional frameworks into learning and community spaces.

The activity used a Braille version of ESCWA’s “Sustainable Development Stories,” through which sixth- and seventh-grade students read selected excerpts following a brief introduction to the SDGs. Implementing this initiative within a school specializing in visual impairment demonstrates the expanding scope of APLA’s interventions, particularly its work on developing accessible learning tools for groups often excluded from traditional development programs.

This initiative also illustrates the breadth of APLA’s approach to SDG localization, using the integration of sustainable development concepts into educational environments as a practical indicator of the capacity of local government units to reach different groups with clear, adapted content. It further aligns with APLA’s vision of connecting education with community engagement and enabling children and youth—including those with disabilities—to gain direct understanding of the role of local government units in advancing development at the local level.
