As part of its ongoing efforts to promote inclusion and digital equity within the local governance structure, the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) organized a training session for staff members of the Public Relations and Media Hub in local government units (LGUs). The session, titled Inclusive Digital Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities, brought together representatives from ten LGUs and aimed to raise their awareness about the importance of integrating persons with disabilities into digital plans and practices within their institutions.
The session was delivered by Ghada Zumlot, a disability consultant, who highlighted the importance of incorporating a rights-based dimension in designing and developing digital environments produced by LGUs to ensure equitable access to information and services. While focusing on the concepts of universal design and inclusive technical design, Zumlot highlighted the POUR (Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust) principles. She also made a review of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as a key reference point for digital accessibility.
It is worth noting that this training is part of a series of activities implemented by APLA in partnership with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) under the Designing Inclusive Digital Governance (INDIGO) Program. These efforts aim to strengthen the capacities of LGUs and promote transparency and inclusion, including the development of digital and media communication tools that address the needs of all community groups.
