The Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) held a focused workshop on urban agriculture and the role of local government units (LGUs) in integrating it into urban development plans. The event was part of the Empowering the Palestinian Community to Harness Sustainable Development Opportunities project, funded by the Belgian Agency International Development (Enabel).
The workshop served as a joint thinking space that brought together representatives of 27 LGUs across various governorates. Participants discussed the concept of urban agriculture as a planning and development tool that contributed to strengthening food security, enhancing environmental awareness, and redefining the relationship between people and cities. The program included a presentation on the concepts, forms, and global significance of urban agriculture within the international urban agenda. Highlighting the Palestinian experience in this field, it provided a review of international experiences and discussed potential opportunities and policies to expand local practices.
Through interactive working groups, participants analyzed the roles of LGUs and developed a set of local initiatives and practical, applicable recommendations representing new approaches for integrating urban agriculture into Palestinian cities. The workshop opened a broader dialogue on how to translate environmental concepts into practical local policies that would enhance the ability of Palestinian cities to confront climate and food challenges through a more sustainable and equitable approach.
