APLA implements Building Tomorrow activity in Sabastiya with over 150 children

With the participation of more than 150 children, the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) organized an interactive activity, titled Building Tomorrow: Children for Sustainable Development in Sabastiya. This practical exercise sought to deepen children’s understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovative educational activities that combined both fun and learning. It created early awareness of the role of local government units (LGUs) in serving communities and promoting social responsibility. The event was organized in cooperation with the Municipality of Sabastiya and supported by the GIZ Local Governance Reform Program.

In his opening remarks, Mohammed Azem, Sabastiya Mayor and APLA Administrative Committee member, expressed his pride in hosting the activity in his town. “Thanks to its history and community, Sabastiya deserves to be a hub for such initiatives,” he affirmed. Commending the national role of APLA in leading such activities, Azem noted that the Association opened a window for municipalities to be closer to citizens through qualitative initiatives that engaged both children and families in the development process.

The activity involved group competitions, where children were divided into teams that competed in a series of educational activities tailored to simplify the SDGs in a practical and enjoyable way. Participants moved among interactive stations that combined mobility and thinking. The SDG Wheel sparked lively discussions about each goal. Coloring the icons turned into a visual tool for reinforcing concepts. Physical challenges added a real-life dimension that connected play to everyday experiences. This experience provided children with a deeper understanding of their role in community and instilled in them the values of cooperation and responsibility.

This activity is part of the APLA’s efforts to localize SDGs and strengthen community participation, both are complementary paths to cultivating awareness among, and engaging, younger generations in development initiatives that reflect unique the Palestinian experience and aspirations for a more sustainable and just future. Today, children who learn through play and practice will be the citizens of tomorrow and carry forward the values of participation and development to future generations.
