The Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) has launched a series of school-based activities in the targeted communities under the "Local Authorities Network for SustainableDevelopment (L.A.N.D)" project. These initiatives aim to empower youth to play a vital role in raising environmental awareness, leading change to improve the quality of their local environments, and increasing their participation in environmental initiatives led by local authorities in the project areas.
As part of these efforts, APLA visited the Beit Liqya Girls Secondary School to follow up on environmental activities conducted by students. The visit included recognizing participants in a logo design competition for the project, organized in collaboration with the school. Students showcased innovative designs reflecting environmental and sustainability themes. The winning design was selected as the official logo for the project, embodying its mission and goals to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.
Additionally, the project’s steering committee for the West Ramallah cluster held a meeting attended by Beit Liqya Mayor Areij Asi, Ni'lin Mayor Yousef Al-Khawaja, FELCOS UMBRIA Project Director Moreno Caporalini, and APLA Project Coordinator Eng. Widad Qadi. The meeting discussed the needs of local authorities in the cluster, updates to the environmental plan, and scheduling activities and projects planned for 2025.
In alignment with the project's goal of supporting the circular economy, the team conducted a field visit to the Beit Liqya landfill to explore the possibility of establishing a tire recycling facility, contributing to sustainable environmental practices and meeting the cluster's needs. The visit also included an inspection of Ni'lin Municipality’s Park to assess planned interventions for rehabilitating public spaces, aiming to enhance the local environment and improve the quality of life in the targeted area.
The "L.A.N.D" project is implemented by APLA with funding from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in collaboration with FELCOS UMBRIA, Union of Trasimeno Municipalities, Trasimeno for Environmental Services, Terre dell'Olio e Sagrantino, Assisi Municipality, the Water and Sanitation Commission – Umbria, and the target communities: Beit Liqia – Nei'lin and the surrounding villages, Huwwarah-Beita and the surrounding villages.
